This is a very nice fall trip. We will stay at the campsite at Irwin Run on friday night. Saturday we will head up river to Ridgway and paddle down river just past Portland Mills. We will set up camp there. Sunday we will paddle back to Irwin Run. You can meet us at Irwin Run parking lot Saturday morning if you can't meet up with us friday night. I am going to create a trip itinerary that will have directions and a gear list for those interested.

We are about 98% sure we are going on this trip. My kids will be paddling their own boats so we may go at our own pace and meet up with the group at the campsites. What is camping like at each spot? Ample room for tents? Do you have GPS coordinates?

Let me get the info together this weekend for the trip. So far it is going to be one friend and I. I may be able to get one other guy to go. Are you going to bring your trailer? I will make a google map of all the spots. I also have very detailed directions on how to get there.

Gear List: What to Bring

As with all outdoor sports, layering is the key for adjusting to varying conditions and body heat. A waterproof jacket is always a good start in case we get rain! Also great to have in one’s wardrobe is a range “wicking” garments made of synthetic fibers such as polypropylene. Remember this motto: “Cotton Kills!” Especially good for activities where you may get wet, wicking fabrics work great any time that the temperature may drop below the comfort zone.

Food
  • Water & your favorite beverages
  • Meals for each day
  • Snacks
  • Beer or hard liquor
Clothing

  • General clothing:
    • Non-cotton (polypropylene and nylon are the best fabrics) shirt, socks, shorts, pants for paddling (things tend to get a bit damp while paddling)
    • Dry cloths to leave in the car (just in case)
    • Extra underwear
  • Footwear:
    • Waterproof shoes or boots
    • Extra socks
  • Rain Gear:
    • Waterproof/breathable jacket or poncho
    • Non-cotton pants (nylon) or waterproof pants
  • Cold weather:
    • Hat
    • Synthetic fleece or wool pullover
    • Neoprene gloves
General Gear
  • Kayak (first things first)
  • Spray skirt
  • Paddle
  • Life Jacket
  • Rope (for kayak tie down)
  • Bailer and/or bilge pump
  • Tent
  • Plastic ground cloth/tarp to place beneath tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad/mat
  • Trash bags
  • Folding chair
  • Eating utensils
  • Cook Pot
  • Knife
  • Stove and fuel
  • Lighter
  • Water bottles or bladder
  • Extra clothing
  • Flashlight or Headlamp
  • Lantern with extra mantels
  • Camera
  • Bungee cords and/or cord to tie gear into canoe
  • Toilet paper (double bag with zip locks)
  • Anti-bacterial hand cleaner
  • Toothbrush and paste
  • Towel
DryGear
  • Dry bags and Tupperware type containers if available.
  • Garbage bags and big Ziplocs for keeping things dry. Everything should be double bagged!
Overview:

  • Format of Trip:
This trip will be a fantastic weekend paddle down the Clarion River. We will drop the cars off at Irwin Run, where we will shuttle up to the put-in point. After a nice day of paddling, we will take out and camp at secluded area assessable only by boat. The next day will paddle down river to Irwin Run, back to the cars.
  • Equipment Info:
Please bring all necessary camping gear and anything else you would like to have on this trip.
  • Technical/Physical Difficulty:
This section of the Clarion River is relatively smooth, so we will be able to take in the scenery and enjoy each other’s company.
Bathroom Facilities:
Bathroom facilities will be available at the beginning of the outing, but along the way we’ll make like proverbial bears in the woods!
